On October 28, Shawn Mendes took a moment to address long-standing rumors about his sexuality during a heartfelt speech at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado. Speaking candidly to fans, Mendes shared his thoughts on the ongoing speculation surrounding his sexual orientation, admitting that he, too, is still figuring things out.
“The real truth about my life and my sexuality is, man, I’m just figuring it out like everyone,” Mendes said in a fan-filmed video from the concert. “I don’t really know sometimes, but I know other times. It feels really scary because we live in a society that has a lot to say about that. I’m trying to be really brave and just allow myself to just be human and feel things.”

Mendes, 25, shared how the speculation has followed him since he was “really young.” He explained, “I think it’s kind of silly because I think sexuality is a beautifully complex thing, and it’s so hard to just put into boxes.” The “Stitches” singer acknowledged how challenging it has been to navigate public scrutiny around something he considers deeply personal.
As part of his performance, Mendes debuted a new, unreleased song titled “The Mountain,” which he wrote as a way to explore these personal struggles. In the song, he sings, “You can say I like girls or boys, whatever fits your mold.” Speaking about the song, Mendes expressed that writing it felt like an important step in embracing his “truth” and connecting more authentically with his fans.

Mendes has previously voiced frustrations with the ongoing rumors surrounding his sexuality, calling it “frustrating” in a 2020 podcast appearance. He emphasized, “It’s such a tricky thing. You want to say, ‘I’m not gay, but it’d be fine if I was gay — but also, there’s nothing wrong with being gay, but I’m not.’” In a 2018 Rolling Stone interview, he also highlighted the risks of speculation, warning that such rumors “can really hurt people.”
As Mendes continues his journey, he remains focused on being true to himself and fostering open connections with his fans.
