"I just want to take a moment to remember someone who was very, very dear to us," Ora began. She recalled Payne as "one of the kindest people" she had known, emphasizing his generous spirit and his lasting impact on the lives of those around him. "He had the biggest heart and was always the first person to offer help," she said. "He brought so much joy to every room he walked into and left such a mark on this world."
Ora and Payne previously collaborated on the 2018 track "For You," featured in the Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack. Reflecting on their shared memories, Ora and MTV's producers discussed various ways to honor Payne during the show. Ultimately, Ora decided that "sometimes just simply speaking is enough."
As the tribute continued, the event featured an in-memoriam montage that showcased Payne's life, with photos and video clips set to One Direction's "Night Changes." The montage ended with the words, "MTV remembers Liam Payne 1993–2024."
Payne's sudden death occurred on Oct. 16 in Buenos Aires, where he tragically fell from a hotel balcony. Following the incident, a toxicology report revealed substances in his system. Ora had previously honored Payne shortly after his passing with an emotional performance in Japan, as well as a heartfelt Instagram post, remembering him as a kind soul and a joyful presence.
