Anne Hathaway has officially apologized to Norwegian journalist Kjersti Flaa, more than a decade after what was described as an "awful" interview during the Les Misérables press junket. The incident resurfaced when Flaa posted a YouTube video on October 6 titled, "This might be my worst interview idea ever," in which she recounted her uncomfortable experience interviewing Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, and Amanda Seyfried in 2012.
During the interview, Flaa asked the actors to sing their answers in keeping with the musical theme of the film. While Hugh Jackman and Amanda Seyfried were willing to go along with the idea, Hathaway was not. "Well, I won't be doing that," Hathaway bluntly stated, leading the interview to take a downturn. Flaa noted that after Hathaway's refusal, the exchange continued with brief, one-word answers, making for an awkward and uncomfortable experience.
In a follow-up YouTube video uploaded a few days later, Flaa revealed that Hathaway had reached out through her publicist to offer a sincere apology. "I was pretty shocked," Flaa said, admitting that she hadn't expected Hathaway to contact her. According to Flaa, the apology was deeply personal and explained what the actress had been going through at the time of the interview. Hathaway expressed regret for her behavior and acknowledged that the interview had been difficult.
Flaa described the email as "touching" and said it nearly brought her to tears. Hathaway not only apologized for the awkward interaction but also invited Flaa to interview her again for any of her future films. Flaa was moved by the gesture, expressing her gratitude and saying she looked forward to their next interview.
Fans have responded positively to Hathaway's apology, with many praising the actress for taking accountability and demonstrating humility. One fan commented, "Anne taking accountability demonstrates good character. This shows humility and self-awareness."
This apology comes after another of Flaa's past interviews recently resurfaced, where Blake Lively responded to a question about her pregnancy in 2016, also causing an uncomfortable moment.
